PROMOTE – Prosthetic and Orthotic Specialist Modules for Higher Education Training in Europe

PROMOTE is an Erasmus+ Higher Education project that aims to strengthen and formalize the academic foundation of the Prosthetics and Orthotics (P&O) profession across Europe. Despite the growing need for qualified professionals due to demographic changes and rising demands in the healthcare sector, formal academic education in P&O is still limited or fragmented in many EU countries.

  • Project Duration: 01.11.2022 – 31.10.2025

  • Funding Programme: Erasmus+ KA220-HED – Cooperation Partnerships in Higher Education

To bridge this gap, the PROMOTE project brings together leading European institutions to develop a modular, competence-oriented learning pathway that offers access and progression from vocational training to bachelor, master, and even doctoral-level education. The initiative promotes permeability across national systems and supports professionals in gaining academic recognition, upskilling, and engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration.

Project Activities

The PROMOTE project responds to the shortage of formal P&O education in Europe by creating an inclusive and modular higher education programme based on real needs in the healthcare and rehabilitation sectors. It aims to:

  • Provide upskilling and academic pathways for professionals already working in the P&O sector without formal degrees.

  • Create bridging modules to link different Bachelor and Master formats in Europe.

  • Promote interdisciplinary learning between P&O, engineering (e.g., biorobotics), and rehabilitation sciences.

  • Foster the academisation of P&O and support professionalisation in teaching and research.

  • Implement a Competence-Oriented Learning approach aligned with EQF, ECTS, ECVET, and VINFL validation.

  • Develop and test a flexible blended learning system, using modern open educational resources and technologies.

Target Groups

The PROMOTE programme is designed for three main audiences:

  1. Practicing professionals in the P&O field without academic degrees
→ Supported through bridging modules and competence validation towards EQF Level 6

  2. Bachelor students in P&O and related fields
→ Given access to 60-ECTS modules that connect to European Master programmes

  3. Doctoral research students in related areas (e.g., biorobotics, rehabilitation engineering)
→ Offered practical P&O knowledge via CPD modules
